We Ask Of You O God ...

An extract from Rev. Clement Wong’s message for the GE13 Prayer Meeting (held on 1st May)

5th May is a very crucial day for Malaysia and all Malaysians. It is a day when Malaysians go to the polls to choose the government that will rule this country for the next 5 years.
Let’s find out from the Bible what the heart of God is in regards to our nation. We read in the scriptures God always has messages for nations. There are nations that are evil and there are nations that are righteous.
Proverbs 11:18-19 The wicked man does deceptive work, but he who sows righteousness will have a sure reward. As righteousness leads to life, so he who pursues evil pursues it to his own death.

Ecclesiastes 5:8-10 If you see the oppression of the poor, and the violent perversion of justice and righteousness in a province, do not marvel at the matter; for high official watches over high official, and higher officials are over them. Moreover the profit of the land is for all; even the king is served from the field. He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; Nor he who loves abundance, with increase.
Everyone has the right to vote rightly. As Christians, it is our responsibility to vote rightly. We can express our wishes and desires to God as to the kind of government we desire to rule over Malaysia. I believe God hears our prayers. I believe the cries of the oppressed has gone to the altar of heaven.
Proverbs 14:34 Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.
In order for our nation to progress and to grow, there needs to be righteousness and justice.

We, as a church can ask God for a fair and just government. We pray for a government that is free from corruption; a government that can differentiate between right from wrong.

We ask God for a government that believes in equality for all and a government that is against racism.

I dream of the day when we can truly call ourselves Malaysians; when we are not recognised as Malay, Chinese, Indian or Others but as Malaysians.
We pray for a government that will recognise the independence of the police, the army, the navy, the civil servants and the judiciary. We ask God for righteousness; for righteousness will exalt a nation.
We pray for good governance where the wealth of the nation is shared and enjoyed by all her citizens.

But there is fear and great concern in our hearts of a tide of evil that will build up before and after the elections. The Bible tells us in Isaiah 59:19 So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and His glory from the rising of the sun; when the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him.
We are in a serious spiritual warfare. There is a struggle in the heavenly places. In order for us to have righteousness in our nation, we need to pray. No matter what evil is brought about, it cannot outdo the power, the wisdom, the greatness and the sovereignty of God. Let the prayers and tears of the saints move the hand of God to push back the tide of evil. No evil can change the plan of God.

As Christians, it is our responsibility to pray for harmony and peace before, during and after the elections; for God’s purpose to be fulfilled in our nation; and that we will be a nation that follows after God and that we will be a blessing to other nations.
